World History for General Studies (Paper -1) by Ravi Shankar - Is it worth buying for Main Examination preparation?
Civil Service Main Examination 2013 is concluded, now the candidates have some clear cut idea about how and from where the questions are asked. Before the examination many new books were coming in the market just like the mushroom during the raining season. Not all mushroom's are good and the same is applicable to study materials too. I came across a book which claims that it is a comprehensive package world history in General studies paper-1. Is it worth buying? I am here to provide you with a critical review of the book, considering the quality of its contents, way of presentation, correlation with prescribed syllabus and of course a comparison with the main examination question paper.

- Africa was chopped into states artificially created by accident of European competition. Analyse. - Covered in Chapter 6: Imperialism and Colonialism.
- American Revolution was an economic revolt against mercantilism. Substantiate. - This question is almost picked from the model practice question provided at the end of each chapter. Here is the model question mentioned in the book, " The American Revolution was essentially as economic conflict between American capitalism as British Mercantilism."?
Positive Features
- Lucidly written in the format of notes.
- Covers almost all prominent part of the syllabus.
- Font is catchy and it draws interest to read.
- Practice questions after every chapter and mock questions with answers at the end of the book.
- Good quality paper
Drawback
- History of China, Japan, Vietnam are not covered extensively. In fact NCERT covers this area.
Over all it's a good buy for World History portion of main examination. Of course NCERT too covers these areas. The topics covered will also be useful in tackling objective questions in other competitive examinations (IB, SSC CGL etc,) too.

IB ACIO Executive Examination Cut Off Marks - RTI reply from Intelligence Bureau
Intelligence Bureau Executive examination is scheduled to be conducted on September 15, 2013. I am sure just hours after the examination the request to Google to provide them expected cut off for the year will pour in. As I promised in my earlier post, I filed RTI to Intelligence Bureau requesting them provide me category wise cut off marks of the last selected candidate in IB ACIO 2012 examination. This will help candidates to have some basic idea before they appear for this year examination. But my try to get information regarding the cut off failed as IB regretted to provide me information, stating that it is exempted from providing the same under Section 24(1) and Second schedule of RTI act.
What to understand from this?

Prepare well for the examination. Never think which side you will fall from the wall like a cat. Instead jump and cross the wall.
What to understand from this?
- Any site/blog which claims to provide cut off or expected cut off are just fake. IB so far has never revealed any cut off of any of its previous examinations.
- Some sites claim that they conducted online survey requesting the aspirants to provide their expected marks to conclude a expected cut off. But my dear friends, it is ultimately waste of time. Hardly 100 to 200 would have given their score and many in fact claim more marks in online forums as usual to show off. So do not waste your time in predicting. In fact in SBI PO 2013 all the predictions online went in vain after the official cut off was released.

- IB ACIO 2012 official cut off - No IB hasn't released and you cannot get it by filing RTI as IB is exempted.
- IB ACIO 2013 expected cut off - Don't waste your time in bogus claims. Since there is no official release before, claims of expected cut off will be useless.

How to solve IBPS Quantitative Aptitude fastly?
Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) is conducting Common Written Examination (CWE) for
- Probationary Officer's for Nationalized Banks
- Probationary Clerks for Nationalized Banks
- Officer for Rural Banks
- Assistants for Rural Banks
- Specialist officers for Nationalized Banks etc.,
In all these exams Quantitative Aptitude is common. Aspirants who attended these previous exams of IBPS particularly the IBPS PO exam held in March 2012 would have realized the toughness of the exam particularly in reasoning and aptitude. Emphasis is given to the reasoning and aptitude in rural officer and assistant exams too. 1.25 Marks is allotted per question to and both these sections count together for 100 marks.
But attending the minimum required questions to get the minimum passing marks itself is a big task for many. Candidates who attended the IBPS PO March 2012 will have a clear idea about what I am saying about. I am sure 90 percent of you will be following Quantitative Aptitude by R S Agarwal or Special books designed by the coaching centers which are more or less similar to the above book with few tricks. I too followed and following the same. But now I have got a new book which is some what useful in solving the questions in a faster way, which is highly useful for competitive exams like the banking.
What's the specialty of the book?
It teaches us the Vedic method of solving maths problems, which is highly useful for solving quickly.
Example
How do you find the square 125? Do you do 125*125 or (a+b)^2 formula. But vedic maths teaches a faster method for this.
Here is the solution using Vedic maths,
125 (separate into two parts 12 and 5. Multiply 12 with the next number and square 5. Wrtie the answers together thats it)
12*13 = 156
5*5 = 25
So answer = 15625
Isn't it easy? There are many similar tricks which will be highly useful in IBPS aptitude.
Intelligent Usage
I personally will suggest you to use both conventional and vedic mathematics together. It is our intelligence which has to decide where we have to use proper method. Because finding square's itself has 5 to 6 methods. It is us who have to decide in fraction of seconds about which method to use.
Book on Vedic Maths for IBPS
How to become a Human Calculator by Aditi Singhal is the book on Vedic Maths which will be highly useful competitive exams particularly IBPS. It was suggested to me buy a vedic maths tutor and the author of the book holds the fastest mental calculations. I really found it useful and making use of both Vedic Maths and Conventional maths at proper places for faster solving.Do you like to buy it?
Bottom Note:
I am not recommending the book on behalf of Flipkart or Aditi Singhal. I used it personally and found it useful. If you like you can buy it. I am sure it will have an impact in your timings.
