ILO World Work Report 2014 - Highlights
- Developing Countries are catching up with Advanced Economies: Between 1980 and 2011 per capita income of developing countries grew on average by 3.3% (in 140 Countries) and Advanced Economies by 1.8%
- Cross-Country difference is significant in both developing and advanced economies.
- Countries investing in quality jobs making progress
- Half the working forces (around 1.45 Billion) in developing countries are still self-employed or undertake unpaid employment – It means no guaranteed income, social protection or investments in health or education – in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa 3 out of 4 workers are in vulnerable employment
- Working poverty (earning less than US $2/day) has reduced – one third of total employment (839 million workers) are still under - it was half in 2000.
- 200 million new jobs need to be created over next 5 years to keep pace with growing working population – raises issue of Youth Unemployment – Youth Unemployment rate 12% (3 times the unemployment rate of adults) in developing countries – high in Middle East and North African regions.
- Qualitative education is also a problem – literacy rate increasing but not quality education in developing countries – gap between skills acquired and job available.
- Lack of quality jobs is the reason for emigration in developing countries – wage difference 10 to 1 – 230 million people living in other country – roughly half from South Asia.
- For generating quality jobs: Economic base need to be diversified and enhance ability of sustainable enterprises.
- Manufacturing tends to faster economic growth and produce quality jobs – report also highlights successful experience based on agricultural and rural development, efficient and equitable use of natural resources and services that connect with rest of economy.
- Natural resources restraints and Environmental limits can be turned into advantage by seizing technological leapfrogging.
- Extend well-designed social protection – helps to reduce poverty, inequality and vulnerable employment and also boosts economic growth and quality jobs. (Activities like Bolsa Familia in Brazil, MGNREGA in India are fruitful providing additional incomes to households)
- Widening income inequalities may erode social cohesion and intensify social unrest as it happened in Arab and Asian countries.
- Senegal, Peru and Vietnam – increase in proportion of wage and salaried workers over past 2 decades – significant reduction in working poverty and higher productivity – even in global meltdown these countries grew 1% faster than other emerging economies.
- Finding from study – sizeable proportion of wage-earners in society helps to reduce income inequality and under employment in workforce - If inequality is more has impact in economy by reducing consumption
What India
need to do?
- Enforcement of statutory minimum wages across different economic sectors would be critical to strengthening the workforce as well as to raising overall productivity.
- NSSO – Between 2010 and 2012 increase in both rural and urban regular wage – bit encouraging.
- In India over 94% of the working population are in unorganised sector and the remaining employed in formal sector contributing to 60% of nominal GDP of the nation.
Where these
points can be used as supplement?
- FDI and its role in increasing quality jobs ?(For instance in retail which is highly debated)
- MGNREGA and its role in providing fixed income and its impact?
- Why employment generation need to be in the top priority for government and its impact in Economy?

How to prepare for IBPS PO Common interview? - Guidelines, Strategy and Mock Questions
Common Interview and Allotment date - Notification
IBPS Common Written Examination (CWE) is over and now it’s
time for the Common Interview. The official notification with respect to the common interview is
already released.
Still in Confusion whether your CWE score is sufficient? - Click Here to Get Confidence
- When does the interview start? – From January 2, 2014.
- When can I download my interview call letter? – From December 16, 2013.
- When does the allotment start? – From April, 2014 (provisional) as of now.
- What documents should I take to the interview? – refer the official notification, it is clearly mentioned.
IBPS Common Interview
Once the IBPS score
card was out, I am sure one set of candidates would have already started
preparing for interview. Some candidates are still in confusion from where they
should start. Few candidates (first timers) are still thronging multiple blogs
and Facebook groups about what is the next step in the recruitment process. I
am sure you will be surprised, one candidate has scored 76 (UR) and questioned in
Yahoo Answers that she has passed the examination and she do know what will
happen next. She enquires whether any individual bank will call/mail her to
come to interview. Who knows this is also the reason (ignorance) that many
candidates in spite of scoring good fail to turn to interview. Let’s hope no candidate miss the common
interview, just because of ignorance. What does the interview committee expect from you?
The number of members
in the interview committee or whether there will be uniform number of members
in the interview committee throughout the nation in all the centres is still
not known or either revealed. However the interview board will not have less
than 4 members. My first advice to dear readers(first timers) is that do not worry or panic
thinking about the number of members in an interview committee. In fact more
the members, less questions from every individual and good chance of escaping
from any single person who continues to ask tough/critical question.
Let us do an analysis before going into the actual topic.
Just ask a question to yourself? If you are the Chairman/ MD of a private bank
and you are sitting in the interview committee. Your bank is performing well
all these years and you are planning to widen your branches in more places. So
you need Officer’s for your branch. What do you expect from the candidates
appearing in the interview? Remember, choosing an inefficient person may
spoil your business.
- Will you hire a person who does not speak? – No, because you need your officers to engage themselves with customers. More you interact with your customers, more the business it brings.
- Will you hire a person who is not clear in what he is expressing? – No, because if you are loan manager or retail manager you need to express your views lucidly to your customers to make them understand it. It is finally you, who bring business to the bank. So the person hired should be good in expressing his views.
Continue to ask similar questions assuming that it is you
who own the bank, this is a process of self-learning and I am sure just this self-learning
and self-analysis will provide you with basic idea of how you should present
yourself.
Won’t they test my knowledge?
Yes of course they
do. But the personality test is not just about digging out your knowledge. It
is also to test your attitude, skills, confidence, creativity and ability to accomplish a task. So your interview basically has two components,
- To test your personality.
- To test you knowledge. ( conceptual understanding and in depth knowledge)
Testing your Personality?
When it comes to personality test, once should keep two
thumb rules in mind,
- “There is no right or wrong answer, it just matters how you answer”.
- “What is right for someone, may be wrong for you and what is wrong for others may be right for you”
What do they ask to test my personality? It is not necessary
that they should ask you question. Your sitting posture , way of answering, way
of dressing, the way you look them and the way you argue/counter argue your points
provides them the necessary clue about your personality. They evaluate your confidence level, inferiority/superiority complexes, ability to face problems, ability to find solutions, your attitude and so on without specifically asking any question, but
from the answers given by you to some general questions.
Let us see one by one,
What does my posture signify? - If you bent yourself with your arms and legs
crossed then it signifies that you are someone who is unfriendly and it is an
indication of antagonism. Amy Cuddy, professor and researcher in Harvard
Business School, reveals that these weak postures increase your cortisol level
and decrease your testosterone level. Higher Cortisol and lower testosterone
reduces your confidence level. Whereas if you sit straight, which she portrays
as strong pose, increases your confidence level by reducing the cortisol level
and increasing the testosterone level. So your sitting posture indirectly gives
them idea about your confidence level.
Do not say sorry often – During the course of interview, if
you fail to answer any questions or answered incorrectly, do say sorry and
suffix it by saying that you will learn/ correct it. But if you continuously
say sorry, it indirectly signifies your inferiority complex. Try to avoid the
word please too.
How to answer the questions? – The way you answer the
questions also gives an idea of your attitude. When a question is asked, first
listen to him fully before giving the answer. Do not interrupt and start answering
before the member completes the question. Answer the question clearly so that
the interview board understands what you wish to say. Remember, it doesn't matter what you say, it only matter’s what they understand. So make your
answers to the point asked expressing it clearly. Efficient answer gives them
an idea of your ability to express your views and communication skill.
Have a smile on your face – Try to have a smile (it doesn’t
meant you have to laugh loud or show your teeth). Just have a gentle smile in
your face, even if you fail to answer the question. It shows your issue solving
capability and ability to handle tensed situation.
Forget exclamatory remarks – Never use, ‘Oh My God’, ‘Shit’
or any other exclamatory words during the course of the interview when you do
something by mistake. Let your hands be in rest. Some people tend to keep their hands on their head or forehead when they commit mistake. If you are in this list, control your hand. Also while answering avoid hand actions.
Groom yourself properly – If you are a boy – have a clean
shave, proper haircut and present yourself appealing. Appealing doesn't mean
the way you dress to visit your girlfriend. You need look like a professional.
The reason is, customers usually have more belief in someone who is well
groomed. Also not being shaved or haircut signifies that you are lazy. It is
not necessary that you have to go with suit. You can go with formal wear
(preferable light shirts/ dark pant) and shoes. Wearing light coloured shirts
will look calm and pleasant, whereas dark colours may sometime irritate the one
who site opposite to you. (Source: Read somewhere long back, Google colour
psychology to learn a bit)
Inferiority/ Superiority complex- Both are dangerous. Never
try to exaggerate what you say nor stay without giving your opinion. Do not
talk too loud (shout) nor talk too low.
Dealing with counter argument: If you have difference of
opinion about anything with the committee member, you can politely say that you
have a difference of opinion and request him to permit you to say it. Do not
give your counter opinion without requesting. It will surely have a negative
impact if the committee member himself has some sort of superiority complex.
First Impression: This topic should have been mentioned
first, but I purposely kept it at the bottom to stress its importance. Usually
after interviewing a candidate, members take a minute or two to call the next
candidate. Just wait for your time to enter. Usually there will be a staff to
assist you. Even if you are asked to come in, gently open the door, request
cordially, “May I come in Sir’s/Madam” and wait until they ask you to take your
seat. Usually once you come near your seat, they immediately ask you to sit.
Say ‘Thank you’, sit with a strong pose with a smile on your face.
Some questions you should be ready to answer
I will just share the
questions, but not the answers as it violates rule 1 and 2 which I have already
mentioned. Let me put it again,
- “There is no right or wrong answer, it just matters how you answer”.
- “What is right for someone, may be wrong for you and what is wrong for other may be right for you”
In all these questions, do not give superstitious/
exaggerated answers; try to be honest and down to earth while answering. There
are few ready made answers available for all these questions provided by
coaching centers. Do not assume that the board members are fool. They can easily differentiate an honest and a naïve answer. Below are few common
questions which are generally asked in bank interviews. These questions are
basically not to test the knowledge, but to test your personality and your
attitude.
- Tell me about yourself?
- Why did you choose banking as your career?
- Why did you prefer banking though you are from Science/Engineering background? (If you are from Science or Engineering background)
- Are you preparing for any other competitive examinations?
- Why do you want shift your profession /company / career? (If you are already in job -Do not complain your past employer at any cost even if they are bad on you - Have a answer if the salary you get now is more than what you will be getting in bank after becoming PO)
- Did you choose banking just because of the lucrative salary or for so called white collar job?
- what did you do all these years after your graduation? (If you are jobless)
- Why did you give “XYZ” bank as your first preference? (Not often asked, but what if asked?)
Questions to test your creativity
- What difference can you bring after joining in a bank as PO?
- What new marketing strategy can you adopt to increase the business in your bank?
- Suggest some innovative ideas for financial inclusion?
- How can you market the need for credit cards in the present generation? (Other retail banking products too may asked in similar fashion).
- Other similar questions to study your skill and creativity.
Questions to test your knowledge
Your knowledge on
current happenings, concepts on banking, aptitude skill and computer awareness
were already tested through the written examination. But what is the proof that
you had better understanding of the concepts? In order to confirm this, few
questions usually of analyzing type are asked to trigger your thinking
capability. Sometimes direct questions too are asked, similar to what is asked
in written examination. But there is a
universal truth, if the questions continue to rise in difficulty, then you are
performing well. If the level of question has dropped from what is asked to you
before, then probably you did not satisfy them. Usually to make you comfort
(mostly) they start with some fundamental questions. What is IFSC code? Why it
is required? What is MICR code? Why it is required? How bank transactions are made? What is the
difference between NEFT and RTGS? What does it mean by priority sector lending?
These questions are like starter following your personality
questions which I mentioned previously after seeing your profile. Based on you
answers, level of questions may vary. Usually the questions get diverted from
your answer. Be careful when you mention any concept/ term. Probably your next
question will be the same. The same technique can be used to get the board
members to your comfort zone. For instance, if you have done quite a good
research in financial inclusion and have better ideas. Try to bring the concept
of financial inclusion when you answer a question. Give a slight stress and
expect the question from your comfort zone.
Topics to cover for the upcoming IBPS PO common interview
Let me share few
topics of importance which one need to cover before appearing in interview.
- Refine your basic knowledge on banking concepts and economic indicators. (Similar to what you prepared for written examination, but now enrich your knowledge in concepts so that you can answer all types of interrogations on these topics).
- New Banking Licence – Pros and Cons
- NPA in bank – what can be done and your opinion on steps taken by government to tackle the issue.
- What additional steps can be taken to improve security in ATM? (Remember the recent Bangalore tragedy.)
- Are internet banking / mobile banking / online transactions safe? How will you convince a customer about its safety and ease of use?
- What is your opinion about the RBI’s permission to permit WOS of foreign banks to acquire to domestic private banks? (Bank unions are going on strike against this decision on 18th December, so you can learn the pros by reading from RBI point of view and cons by reading the trade union point of view.)
- What is your opinion about the RBI decision to allow foreign bank subsidiaries to list in local stock exchange?
- What are the problems faced by farmers? Do you think Agriculture loan waiver has reached the targeted audience? What are the Government’s steps to tackle the issue? Give your suggestion? (Agriculture loan comes under priority sector lending, so one need to have idea about this.)
- What can be done to keep inflation under control?
- What is the reason for dollar price hike recently and the remedy taken?
- What is your opinion about the recent monetary policy changes by RBI? (Look at RBI site)
- Have a look at the sites which I will be mentioning and note for any new order/ policy etc., – RBI, Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, SEBI, IRDA before going to interview.
- Also go through recent topics of discussion like - Food Security Bill, Cash Benefit Transfer, Mangalyan (why to spend 450 crores in Mars exploration when more than 70% of our people are still in poverty?) etc,
- Questions listed above are to give some basic idea. Candidates are asked to widen their knowledge conceptually in the recent topics of Economics and Current Affairs.
- Important topics related to banking which are not mentioned can be shared by experienced candidates. It will be helpful to first timers.
- I personally believe that one need to answer honestly to questions on his profile. However some coaching centres have ready made answers for it. What I have mentioned is my view, it is upto the candidates to decide.
"With Confidence You Have Won Before You Have Started" - Marcus Garvey
How many marks are required in interview to get job in IBPS PO-3?
“After a Storm Comes a Calm” – said Mathew Henry. But this
may not be true with aspirants who have given their attempt to any of the
competitive examinations. For them, it’s quite different, I would quote it as, “Storm
before and after the calm (exam).” The reason why I refer so is that many
aspirants before giving their exams storm in several sites and Facebook group
asking for question papers, notes etc., and once the exam is completed they
storm predicting the cut off and once the results are released they storm
discussing the possibility of getting the job and this is what has happened
after IBPS has released the marks and cut off for the post of PO for the year
2013-14.
What am I going to tell new about IBPS PO 3?
- The first and foremost is that, at the end of this article the aspirants will be confident that almost all have chance to clear the interview and get allotted in various banks irrespective of the marks they scored.
- How date of birth may play a vital role in determining your posts?
- Why there is no use in discussing/predicting cut off online?
If you wish to know
answers for the above mentioned, I advise you to read further. The below claims
made my are based on data collected from IBPS and other authentic sources
(related to past experience).
Cut off in IBPS PO 3 and chances in Interview
IBPS has released its
mark statement and cut off on 07.12.2013. Once the marks are released, almost
all blogs and Facebook groups started flooding with a common question. And the
questions are,
“Sir, I have scored 64 in UR, what is the chance that I will clear?”
“I have scored just 62 in OBC, I think I have less chance. What’s your opinion?”
“Unbelievable, I have scored 99 in UR. What is my chance?” – (To these people I would say there is no chance as they either make to fun of others or they are bookworms.)
The one word answer
to all these questions is that, everyone who got their call to interview have
chance to get allotment. The one with more marks have bright chance and one
with less marks need to perform well in interview. But how do I say? Am I
preaching confident development? Of course I am, but not just with assumptions
but with real data.
I am going to compare
the data’s of IBPS PO 2 and IBPS PO 3, for coming into a conclusion. I am going
to compare last year cut off, final marks for allotment in both phases and
student to vacancy ratio.
What will be the ratio of candidates called for interview?
It should be 1:3. It
means 3 candidates for 1 post. This is because in IBPS PO 2, there were around
21000 vacancies approximately and 60 thousand candidates have cleared the
examination (last year common interview was decided after declaration of
result, so we are not sure how many among the 60k missed their ticket to
interview, but for data classification we will assume all the 60k candidates were
called.) Similarly this year around, 57000 candidates have cleared (approximate
value said by IBPS personnel when contacted via toll free number - @courtesy – Ramandeep Singh- bankexamtoday). If you wish, you can cross verify in this toll free number
1800 222 366 between 9.30 AM and 6.00 PM and the vacancies are expected to be
same as we have additional institutions recruiting this year compared to last
year (apart from Mahila Bank, which recruited 105
women candidates at the year end).So we can confirm that the ratio is 1:3 this
year too. Many claim that due to incomplete filling in IBPS PO1, we had many vacancies
in PO2. It is true to some extent, but the same difference will be balanced
with the new organisations, unfilled vacanices after round 2 of allotment and also the branches have increased for all banks
so the demand for more PO is always there. However this ratio may change later once the attendance of interview and pass percentage in interview is known. At the final stage it almost comes to 1:2.
This chart can be
otherwise said as the marks obtained by the last selected candidate in various
categories who are called for interview.

Marks of PO 1 is not considered as it didn't have common interview, also there is no use in comparing the cut off of IBPS-2 and IBPS-3 as the number of candidates attended and the difficulty level were comparatively higher. The above table is just to give a glimpse of the lowest marks of each category with which candidates went for interview in 2012 and to compare that with this year marks. The above mentioned marks is out of 250 in PO2 and 200 in PO 3, which is later converted to 80 while calculating the component from written examination.

- Min Marks - it is the least marks of IBPS P0 -2 for various category.
- Final Marks - it is mark scored by the last selected candidate in various category, after calculating the 80% component of written and 20% component of interview which is conducted for 100 marks.
- 80% of CWE - It is the 80% component carried forward by the least mark candidate to next stage.
- Required 20% - It is the 20% marks required for a candidate to get into the list of merit.
- Marks required - It is the marks required by the candidate who went to the interview with the least mark to get qualified in the phase 1 of allotment.
Interpretation of above data
- Marks required by UR in interview is 94.6, which is quite high. The reason for the same is many candidates in reservation who scored good marks enter into this zone. In other words toppers are in this zone irrespective of reservation which keeps the cut off high. This is the same reason why the required marks in reservation is considerably low.
- This year it is expected from the marks revealed by candidates in various forums, most of the candidates are expected to be in the bracket of 65 to 80.
- The marks revealed online by various candidates cannot be considered for coming to a conclusion in deciding the safe zone, as many give a fake claim and even if they are true they form a less portion. Hardly 200 to 300 give their scores and you cannot predict the same for 57000 candidates. One good example is that many forums predicted above 80 cut off and now it is 61. However the graph is almost similar to last year and the safe marks in interview will work out this year too.
Maximum and minimum marks in allotment process in phase -2 (IBPS PO – 2)
The above mentioned data is for the first allotment, after many candidates failed to join another round of allotment was made and the below table gives the minimum final marks for which candidates are called. This marks can also be said as the marks scored by the last selected candidate who got allotted in IBPS PO-2 .

So what does the above table indicate, it is very clear that everyone who got selected for interview has chance to get allotted to some bank irrespective of marks. The above mentioned marks is the minimum required in interview for a candidate who went with the least mark in various categories.
Why second allotment in IBPS PO-2?
Many candidates who selected in first allotment did't turn back to join the allotted bank due to multiple reasons and to fill this shortage waiting list candidates were called for next round of allotment.
How many vacancies were there is second allotment?
I am sure you will be in surprise, if you never heard before. Totally 5806( UR-3080; OBS - 1431; SC-794; ST-501; VI-111;HI-166; OC-70) candidates didn't join the allotted bank in round 1. It is almost 27% of the total vacancies. It is also sure that all these 5806 were not filled as many refused in this stage too. The left over seats were carried forward to this year allotment.
Why candidates refuse to join?
Allotment is made on all India basis, many candidates prefer home state, so when they are allotted in other states they refuse to join. Some candidates (particularly women candidates) have requested for allotment in home state showing genuine reason for not able to join in other state. They were allotted in home state in second round. One of my friend who was 9 months pregnant during allotment was allotted in Dena bank (Mumabi branch) in allotment 1, she gave a request showing the same, to offer her allotment in Chennai. She was allotted in Syndicate bank, Chennai in the second allotment and above that she was asked to undergo initial one month training in Chennai itself where others had their training in Manipal. Some claim it is because of some political backup, but I know her personally and it was a genuine request. Apart from this many candidates who already employed also refuse, but this percentage will be less compared to the above.
Date of Birth and final allotment
Compared to last year the gap in score between many candidates is very narrow as many stand in the zone of 65 to 80. I assume that in the final stage many may stand with the same marks. In this case banks have a soft corner towards seniors and the list when score is same will be decided on the basis of age. The same was done last year too.
Why there is no use in discussing cut off and other predictions online?
Many sites give claim based on their assumptions. In fact most of the times it didn't work out. During SBI PO, almost all sites predicted cut off around 110 for UR, but it was above 160. The same happened with SSC CGL and also now with IBPS PO 3. So do not waste your time in discussing all these useless things online as they are of no use.
Just think about it : What if a candidate has less score, but has incredible skills which he expresses during interview? I am sure he will be brought into the merit list by awarding marks accordingly. This has happened with many candidates. But may be they may not get the bank and state of their choice. So keep this and above data in mind. Ensure yourself that you still have a good chance. Start preparing for interview. I wish everyone of you to move ahead in life getting the bank of your wish.
Give your honest feedback, comments, criticisms and corrections if any which will be valuable and help other candidates in future.
