- Centre plans to expand the coverage of Below Poverty Line population under the Public Distribution System (PDS) to 8.07 crore from the current 6.52 crore based on the acceptance of the Tendulkar Committee’s poverty projections for 2011 by the Planning Commission.
- Jaipur’s Jantar Mantar inscribed in the World Heritage List. 33 countries submitted 32 sites for consideration this year.
- Rs.54000 Posco steel project in Orissa has been told to stop due to the violation of Forest Rights Act.
- Lok Sabha approved SBI (Amendment) Bill, 2010 which will reduce government holding on the bank to 51% from 55% and raise funds from the capital market.
International
- India-US signed agreement for reprocessing spent nuclear fuel under the civil nuclear deal. This has been signed in pursuant to article 6(iii) of the 123 agreement. This agreement has been signed in Washington by Indian Ambassador Meera Shankar and U.S under secretary of state for Political Affairs William Burns.
- Russian President Dimitry Medvedev voiced his support for South Africa to join the BRIC group which constitutes of Brazil, Russia, India and China.
Sports
- Gagan Narang gets bronze medal in the 50th shooting World championship held in Munich. This is the 5th World championship medal from an Indian. The other four are Abhinav Bindra (gold), Manavjit Singh Sandhu (gold), Dr.Karnal Singh (silver) and Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (bronze).
- Mark Webber wins Hungarian Grand Prix followed by Alonso and Vettel.
- American twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan set an ATP (Tennis) record with their 62nd Career double’s crown.
Awards
- The 42nd Jnanpith Award 2006 has been presented to Konkani litterateur Ravindra Kelekar.
- Leelavathi Award which is honoured for contributions to public outreach in Mathematics has been presented to Indian origin Simon Lehna Singh by the International Mathematician Union.
