Swine Flu! I hope this is the word uttered through out the world in 2009. Well, what do you mean by that? Its just a flu, then why we couldn't able to control that and save some precious human life? What happened to our science and technology in this concern? Yes, I know most of us would have wondered these questions.Before going into the actually topic,how many of you are aware of te meaning of the word swine? When you search it online you will get the result like this :(stout-bodied short-legged omnivorous animals).Which is nothing but a Pig.

I hope now you got a idea what a swine flu means-its nothing but a flu which affects the pig normally.Then why did it affect humans? Before that we need to learn something about its classification.

CLASSIFICATION OF FLU VIRUS

Influenza C : It generally affects humans and pigs, but do not affect birds.This form of influenza does not cause pandemics ( infectious disease that is spreading through human populations across a large region) in humans

Influenza A :Influenza A has several sub-types: H1N1, H1N2, H2N3, H3N1 and H3N2. Out of this three types affect pigs:H1N1, H1N2 and H3N2. These three are the common strains world wide.

What type is the present Swine Flu?

The Swine flu which caused pandemic is sub type of Influenza A virus.

We know its type, then why there is no medicine?

I think this is your next question.Swine flu is basically subtype of a strain(breed or variety) of Influenza A virus. Most of the genes in this virus are similar those virus which affects pigs.Basically the RNA of viruses which affects humans will be a thread like structure, but the RNA of this virus is split between eight independent pieces of RNA that act like mini chromosomes(thread like structure which carries genes), allowing piece of RNA from different viruses to mix together and form a new virus .H1N1 the one which is making a round now is a combination of two swine influenza virus one from North America and the other from Europe.North American flu itself is a combination of a bird and a human flu virus.The swine flu from Europe is a pig flu. Hence the present H1N1 is a combination of four components as one endemic in humans,one endemic in birds, and two endemic in pigs.

Since it is a new breed, it took time for us two classify it and find medicine.

SYMPTOMS OF SWINE FLU:

swine flu;swine flu symptoms;

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in humans the symptoms of the 2009 "swine flu" H1N1 virus are similar to those of influenza and of influenza-like illness in general. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. The 2009 outbreak has shown an increased percentage of patients reporting diarrhea and vomiting. The 2009 H1N1 virus is not zoonotic swine flu, as it is not transmitted from pigs to humans, but from person to person.

TREATMENT:

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the use of Tamiflu (oseltamivir) or Relenza (zanamivir) for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine influenza viruses; however, the majority of people infected with the virus make a full recovery without requiring medical attention or antiviral drugs.The virus isolates in the 2009 outbreak have been found resistant to amantadine and rimantadine. It is provided in the form of nasal spray.

EFFECTS IN INDIA:

India has had over 1,000 confirmed cases of swine flu so far — that’s roughly one case per every million people in the nation.The first case of death had its epicenter in Pune. Schools and Colleges were closed and all were running to the nearby clinics to buy mask, where the price of mask had a excitation all over the nation.From the normal cost of Rs.5 or 10 it went to Rs.100 to 150.The health ministry had taken a lot of measures to prevent, but however the death toll went to 134 approximately.Lot of Swine flu diagnosis centers were opened and even a few private clinics were also given permission for the diagnosis of swine flu.Even it became a panic among the people.The headlines of all media were focussed on it.
